This semester I took a class entitled, "Teachings of the Living Prophets". Guys...did you know that we have a living prophet here, on the earth today? A man who is called of God, just like Moses? It's true! I testify of that. I have had many personal, sacred experiences that have helped me to know that the Lord reveals His will to a living prophet today.
I also know that we have Apostles on the earth today who have the sacred obligation of testifying of the Savior Jesus Christ. Just like Paul and Peter during the time that the Savior was on the earth, we have ordinary men who have been called of God to do great and marvelous things.
QUOTES ON MENTAL HEALTH:
Do you--or someone you love--face disease or depression or death? Whatever other steps you may need to take to resolve these concerns, come first to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Trust in heaven's promises (para 14).
However bewildering this all may be, these afflictions [referring to neuroses and psychoses] are some of the realities of mortal life, and there should be no more shame in acknowledging them than in acknowledging a battle with high blood pressure or the sudden appearance of a malignant tumor" (para 1).
So how do you best respond when mental or emotional challenges confront you or those you love? Above all, never lose faith in your Father in Heaven, who loves you more than you can comprehend…Faithfully pursue the time-tested devotional practices that bring the Spirit of the Lord into your life. Seek the counsel of those who hold keys for your spiritual well-being. Ask for and cherish priesthood blessings. Take the sacrament every week, and hold fast to the perfecting promises of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Believe in miracles" (para 6).
Mental Health is a real, important, and necessary part of our physical existence here on earth. Just like we have physical diseases that rob our body of strength, there are mental diseases that rob us of precious strength, will power, and drive. And, just as our physical diseases sometimes require medication and help of a medical professional, so do our mental diseases.
I feel that the stigmas against mental illness that have plagued our society for hundreds of years is largely due to the power of the adversary. He knows that when we are feeling well physically AND mentally, we are unstoppable in performing the work of the Lord. We must be willing to fight for ourselves and for others in this battle for mental health. The Lord’s Atonement covers all of the afflictions we face in this life…including mental health.
I know that as we come unto the Savior with humble hearts and a willingness to serve others, He can help us know the best way to keep our whole bodies healthy-mentally, physically, and emotionally.
I am loving my second chance at life.
